An Ordinary Afternoon—At First
The subway rolled forward like it always did—steady, predictable, filled with passengers lost in their own worlds. Some stared at their phones, others gazed out the window. It was just another routine ride through the city.

Seated among the crowd was Petty Officer First Class Daniel Reeves, his posture calm and composed. Beside him sat Rex, a highly trained German Shepherd wearing a clearly marked K9 harness. Even at rest, Rex was alert—watching, listening, sensing everything around him.
A Stranger Steps In
At the next stop, an older man entered the train. His movements were slow, deliberate, as though each step required careful effort. He scanned the car before pausing beside Daniel.
“Mind if I sit here?” he asked softly.
Daniel nodded. “Go ahead.”
The man sat down, letting out a quiet breath. For a moment, everything seemed normal again.
