Nedra Talley Ross, Last Original Member of The Ronettes, Dies at 80

Nedra Talley Ross, a founding voice behind the legendary 1960s girl group The Ronettes, has passed away at the age of 80.

Her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, confirmed the news on Sunday with a heartfelt message shared on social media. She said her mother died peacefully at home, surrounded by family and comforted by their presence.

Born on January 27, 1946, Nedra Talley Ross came from a diverse heritage that included Black, Native American, Irish, and Puerto Rican roots. She later married Scott Ross, a former DJ who became known for his work with the The 700 Club. Together, they raised four children.

Talley Ross was the final surviving member of The Ronettes, the influential trio she formed alongside her cousins Ronnie Spector and Estelle Bennett. The group played a defining role in shaping early pop music and girl group culture.

They rose to national fame in the early 1960s with chart-topping hits like Be My Baby, along with fan favorites such as Walking in the Rain and Baby, I Love You. Their signature style—marked by bold fashion and rich harmonies—set a new standard for female groups in the music industry.

Their breakthrough came after being discovered by producer Phil Spector, whose iconic “Wall of Sound” production helped define their musical identity. Despite releasing only one studio album, The Ronettes left a lasting legacy and toured with major acts like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

The group disbanded in 1967, after which Talley Ross stepped away from the spotlight. She later spoke about the pressures of the entertainment world and her desire for a more meaningful, faith-centered life. In 1978, she released a Christian music album and eventually transitioned into a career in real estate.

In 2007, The Ronettes were honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a milestone Talley Ross described as deeply emotional and long overdue recognition.

Following news of her passing, tributes poured in celebrating her contributions to music and culture. The Ronettes’ official channels remembered her as a guiding light whose voice and presence helped shape a timeless sound.

With the earlier passing of Ronnie Spector in 2022 and Estelle Bennett in 2009, Nedra Talley Ross was the last remaining original member of the group. Her death marks the end of an era, but her influence continues through the music that defined a generation.
