What a Student Captured on His Phone While Hiding During the Canada School Shooting

A student trapped inside a Tumbler Ridge classroom during Wednesday’s deadly school shooting has shared the harrowing moment he realized the full scale of the tragedy.

Canada is reeling after one of its deadliest shootings in decades, as nine people were killed and at least 25 others injured on February 10 in the small British Columbia town of Tumbler Ridge. The attacks struck both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby home, leaving the tight-knit community in shock.

Six victims were found inside the school, with a seventh dying en route to the hospital. Authorities also discovered the suspected shooter’s body on campus, apparently from a self-inflicted injury. Two additional victims were found at a nearby residence, which police believe is connected to the attack.

Darian Quist, a Grade 12 student at the secondary school, described the terrifying hours spent barricaded with classmates and a teacher. In an interview with CBC Radio West, he recalled how alarms blared moments after he arrived, sending students scrambling to safety.

“It was definitely tense,” Quist said. “We were all very nervous. We tried to keep things light, motivate each other, and not fall into despair. But once people sent me some photos, that’s when it really hit me what was happening.”
