Major developments have emerged in the ongoing criminal investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. Over the past 24 hours, law enforcement officials have released new surveillance footage, questioned an individual who was later released, and shared additional details about the case that has drawn national attention.
The high-profile investigation, which has generated widespread media coverage due to Guthrie’s connection to “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, is now entering its eleventh day.
Home Security Camera Footage Raises Questions
The FBI recently released images and video recovered from a Nest home security camera outside Nancy Guthrie’s residence in Tucson, Arizona. The footage shows a masked individual dressed in light-colored clothing approaching the home during nighttime hours.
In one frame, the person appears to be carrying a firearm in a manner that drew scrutiny from former FBI agent Mark Harrigan, who previously led the bureau’s Firearms Training Program.
“That is a very non-conventional way to carry a firearm,” Harrigan told The New York Post, noting that the weapon appeared positioned at the front of the individual’s body rather than secured discreetly.
According to Harrigan, individuals intending to commit a crime typically attempt to conceal a weapon to avoid drawing attention. The visible positioning of the firearm, he suggested, could indicate inexperience.
“Rookie” Behavior, Experts Say
Harrigan explained that experienced individuals usually carry firearms at the hip in a more conventional and practical manner. He theorized that the suspect may have initially concealed the weapon in a backpack and adjusted its placement shortly before approaching the door.
Private investigator Andy Kay shared a similar assessment, describing the suspect’s handling of the firearm as potentially indicative of someone lacking professional experience.
Another detail that caught investigators’ attention was the suspect’s interaction with the camera. The footage appears to show the masked individual attempting to obstruct the lens by grabbing nearby vegetation.
Harrigan noted that a more sophisticated offender might have brought tools—such as spray paint or equipment to disable the camera—rather than improvising at the scene. The attempt to cover the camera manually has been described by experts as another possible sign of inexperience.
Advanced Surveillance Technology Helped Recover Footage
The video was released ten days after Guthrie’s disappearance. Authorities explained that the delay occurred in part because the physical security camera had been removed and the homeowner did not subscribe to a cloud storage service, meaning the footage was not automatically preserved.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that investigators were able to recover the video using residual backend data from digital systems, highlighting the growing role of surveillance technology and digital forensics in modern law enforcement.
Former prosecutor and current criminal defense attorney John W. Day told The New York Post that the recovery demonstrates the technical capabilities available to federal investigators in complex cases.
$50,000 Reward Fund Offered
The FBI continues to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s location or the identification of those responsible. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any relevant tips as the search continues.
Savannah Guthrie shared the newly released images and video on social media, appealing directly to the public.
“Someone out there recognizes this person. We believe she is still out there. Bring her home,” she wrote, adding that the family believes her mother is still alive.
Persons of Interest Under Review
During a recent interview on Fox News, FBI Director Patel confirmed that investigators are examining multiple persons of interest. He emphasized that individuals remain persons of interest until formally cleared or charged.
“We have made substantial progress in these last 36 to 48 hours,” Patel said, noting collaboration between federal agencies and local law enforcement partners.
Earlier this week, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that one man had been detained for questioning after a vehicle stop south of Tucson. The individual was later released without charges, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.
Carlos Palazuelos told Fox News that he was the individual stopped by deputies. He stated that he works in the Tucson area making deliveries and denied any involvement in the disappearance. According to Palazuelos, investigators showed a masked image to a family member who reportedly believed there was a resemblance in the eyes.
Ongoing Public Safety Alert
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials stress that no conclusions have been reached and that the case remains active. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact the FBI tip line.
The case underscores the increasing importance of home security systems, digital evidence recovery, and coordinated federal investigations in missing persons cases.
Updates are expected as officials continue to analyze surveillance footage, conduct interviews, and pursue leads in the effort to bring Nancy Guthrie home safely.
