Tragic Air Canada Express Collision at LaGuardia: Latest Updates
A routine flight turned into a heartbreaking tragedy late last night when an Air Canada Express passenger plane collided with a fire truck shortly after landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Officials have now released new details as investigators work to understand the shocking accident.
The Bombardier CRJ-900 twin-jet, operating as Jazz Aviation Flight 8646 from Montreal, had 76 passengers on board when it struck a Port Authority fire truck on Runway 4. The plane was moving at roughly 24 mph when the collision occurred. Tragically, both the pilot and co-pilot lost their lives.
The fire truck had been responding to a separate incident at the Queens airport. Two officers inside the vehicle were hospitalized with broken limbs but are reportedly in stable condition. Video footage circulating online shows the plane’s cockpit tilted upward, with significant damage to the forward fuselage.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that LaGuardia will remain closed at least until Monday, 2 p.m., while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
