What Your Feet May Be Trying to Tell You
Your feet do far more than support your body—they often act as early warning indicators for changes happening deep inside your system. Swelling, heaviness, or discomfort in the lower legs is commonly brushed off as fatigue, but in many cases, it can point to something more significant.
Understanding Foot Swelling
Swelling in the feet and ankles, known medically as edema, occurs when fluid builds up in the surrounding tissues. While occasional swelling can happen after long periods of standing or walking, persistent or frequent swelling may suggest that the body is struggling to maintain proper fluid balance.
Circulation and Fluid Build-Up
One of the most common reasons for swollen feet is reduced circulation. The circulatory system must work against gravity to return blood from the lower body back to the heart. When this process becomes less efficient, fluid can pool in the feet and ankles.
This may result in:
- Tight or heavy sensations in the lower legs
- Sock marks that linger on the skin
- Noticeable puffiness around the ankles
These signs can indicate that the cardiovascular system is under strain and may need attention.
