The Message That Changed Everything
The phone buzzed softly on the kitchen counter while I scraped dried peanut butter off a plate.
It was one of those rare quiet moments after a long, chaotic day—when all six kids are finally asleep and the house feels like it’s taking a deep breath.
Bedtime had been the usual marathon:
three last requests for water, a missing sock emergency, and my youngest asking the question she whispers every night.

“Tell me what?”
“That I’m with Alyssa now.”
The casual tone hurt more than anger ever could.
“You’re… with her?”
“Yes.”
Just like that.
No hesitation. No apology.
This wasn’t a mistake. It was a decision.
“She makes me happy,” he continued. “You’ve let yourself go.”
The words hit harder than anything else he’d said.
“You mean the part where I stopped sleeping because we have six kids?” I asked quietly.
He rolled his eyes.
