Home renovations often come with surprises—but few expect to uncover something this unsettling.
While insulating and drywalling the upstairs bathroom of their historic home, one family made an unexpected discovery hidden deep within the ceiling. What they pulled out stopped the project entirely.
The object was large, circular, and strangely intact. It appeared to be made of a cloth-like material reinforced with what looked like a flexible wooden dowel, forming a ring shape. Despite its age, it moved easily when handled, adding to the mystery. This was not part of the contractor’s work—and no one on site could immediately identify it.
Given the home’s age, the discovery raised even more questions. The house dates back to 1854 and was originally built by Francesca Smith, making it more than 170 years old. What purpose could something like this have served? And how long had it been hidden above the ceiling?
Protective gear was quickly brought out as the object was removed, just in case. Its texture and structure suggested it may not be decorative at all, but something functional—or possibly something that formed naturally over time.
