A Rare but Deeply Impactful Event

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada. The country’s most deadly prior attacks include the 1989 Montreal tragedy, which claimed 14 lives, and the 2020 Nova Scotia rampage that left 22 people dead. In response to past incidents, Canada implemented stricter gun control measures, including a national buyback program targeting certain firearms.

Following Wednesday’s events, approximately 100 students and staff were evacuated from the secondary school. The high school, along with the town’s elementary school and local college, will remain closed for the rest of the week.

Founded as a coal-mining town in the Rocky Mountain foothills near the Alberta border, Tumbler Ridge is known for its natural beauty and tight-knit community — qualities that make this loss even more painful.

As the investigation continues, Canada mourns alongside the families whose lives have been forever changed.

Our thoughts remain with the people of Tumbler Ridge. If you’d like to share a message of support for the community, please do so respectfully in the comments below.
