Health professionals are now raising concerns, warning that wearing unclean undergarments for extended periods can lead to more than just discomfort—it may increase the risk of infections and other health issues.

According to research from 2021, an average pair of worn underwear can contain around 0.1 grams of fecal matter. While that number may sound small, experts emphasize that wearing the same pair for longer than 24 hours can expose the body to unwanted bacteria and potential health complications.

Despite clear hygiene recommendations, many people—especially younger adults—are not following the daily change rule. A 2023 survey found that 36% of individuals aged 18 to 24 admitted to wearing the same underwear for more than a day, while another 14% reported doing so regularly. Repeated use without washing may contribute to issues like rashes, itching, and flare-ups of existing skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. The friction from worn fabric, combined with trapped moisture, can further aggravate sensitive areas.

Wearing the same underwear too long can also raise the risk of common infections. Yeast infections, caused by an overgrowth of fungi, often lead to itching, irritation, and discharge. Another condition, bacterial vaginosis, results from an imbalance of bacteria and may produce a noticeable odor and unusual discharge.

Because certain areas of the body naturally retain more moisture, they can become breeding grounds for bacteria if proper hygiene is not maintained.

Although much of the focus is often on women’s health, men are equally at risk. One common issue is jock itch—a fungal infection that causes redness, itching, and discomfort in the groin and surrounding areas.

Even looser underwear styles, like boxers, don’t eliminate the risk. If worn repeatedly without washing, they can still harbor bacteria and moisture that contribute to skin problems.
