“I’m serious,” she said. “My mom wakes up if the floor creaks.”
Just as Mark opened his mouth to try one last convincing argument—
Crackle.
A sudden electronic sound cut through the silence.
Both of them froze.
The noise wasn’t coming from inside the house. It was coming from right above Mark’s hand… pressed against a small, circular intercom speaker mounted on the wall.
Then a voice came through.
“Hey, Mark. It’s Chloe.”
Sarah’s younger sister.
“Dad says he doesn’t mind if you stay out there,” she continued casually. “Mom says the same… but she’d really appreciate it if you stopped talking so loudly.”
The porch went completely silent.
Mark didn’t move. His hand was still on the button.
Then the speaker crackled again.
“Oh—and Grandpa says,” Chloe added, barely holding back laughter, “if you don’t take your hand off the intercom button right now, he’s coming out there himself… since we’ve all been listening to your entire conversation for the last ten minutes.”
Mark slowly lifted his hand.
Neither of them said a word.
Let’s just say… the evening ended very quickly after that.
