Lila’s Truth Stands Tall
A Brave Little Hand
Ten-year-old Lila Grant sat at her desk, pen moving with purpose. For Career Day, she wrote proudly: “My dad is General Andrew Grant. My mom, Sofia, is a housekeeper. They both serve people.” She added a tiny silver star by “General” and a small broom by “housekeeper.” The scent of lemon cleaner and her father’s strong hugs filled her memories.
The Teacher’s Rebuke
When Mrs. Wexler read the assignment, her smile vanished. “Lila, this isn’t funny,” she said sharply. “There’s no four-star general in your living room. We don’t lie for attention.” Lila’s cheeks burned. She pulled a family photo from her backpack, but Mrs. Wexler didn’t care. With a snap, she tore the paper. “Go to the principal’s office and apologize.”
The Principal’s Dismissal
Principal Harris sighed, treating Lila like a problem. “Your teacher says you made a scene. Rewrite this and apologize.” Lila’s eyes were steady despite tears. “My dad is coming at ten,” she whispered. Harris raised an eyebrow. “We’ll see.”
