The officer inspected the bike. The brakes barely worked. The frame was cracked. Without warning, he smashed the bicycle on the asphalt. The boy screamed. The metal bent, the chain slipped, and the frame twisted. Tears streamed down the boy’s cheeks as the street fell silent.
Then, the officer’s expression softened. Kneeling, he said gently, “You could have been seriously hurt riding this. I had to do something.”
He took the boy’s hand and led him into a nearby toy store. Minutes later, they emerged with a brand-new bike, gleaming in the sunlight. Wide tires, shining frame, and a bell that rang clearly.
The boy froze, tears now of joy, as the officer handed him the handlebars. Hugging him tightly, the officer smiled. For the first time, the boy pedaled freely, not to the squeak of rust, but to the cheerful ring of a perfect new bell. The street watched, smiling along with him.
