What Shoppers Need to Know About the Recent Fruit Recall

Deadly Dried Apricots Recalled in 20 States Over Undeclared Sulfites
Health officials are issuing urgent warnings about a dangerous batch of dried apricots sold in nearly 20 states. Turkana Food Inc.’s Floria Dried Apricots, with an expiration date of November 2026, have been flagged for containing undeclared sulfites, a chemical preservative that can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Sulfites are commonly used to keep foods fresh, from dried fruits to wine, but they can cause hives, swelling, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in rare cases, life-threatening reactions for sensitive individuals. The FDA requires all sulfite content to be clearly labeled on packaging—but these apricots failed that basic safety standard during a routine check by the New York State Department of Agriculture.

The recall covers apricots sold in Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Alabama, Missouri, and California.
