Chaos Erupts at Rhode Island Arena: Eyewitness Confronts Shooter in Life-or-Death Moment

A routine afternoon at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, turned into a nightmare on February 16, 2026. Families came for cheers, camaraderie, and competition—but within seconds, gunfire shattered the calm, leaving the crowd in panic. One eyewitness, Michael Black, is now sharing the split-second decisions that may have prevented even more tragedy.

Black was in the bleachers just before 3 p.m. when the first pops rang out. At first, he thought it was part of the celebration after the home team scored. But the sounds kept coming, sharper and more alarming. Looking up, he saw a gun pointed at people nearby. “I told my wife to run,” Black recalls, “and then I just moved. Instinct took over.”

Positioned a few steps above the shooter, Black lunged, grappling for the firearm. During the struggle, his hand jammed the gun, stopping further shots from firing. Other bystanders quickly joined, helping subdue the suspect.

The immediate threat seemed over—but then the shooter pulled a second gun from his jacket. Before anyone could intervene again, authorities say the man turned the weapon on himself. Police and emergency responders arrived moments later, securing the scene. Black sustained a hand injury and minor facial burns but insists he acted out of instinct, not heroism.
