In a December 2025 appearance on Ezra Klein’s podcast, Newsom made headlines for his pointed criticism of Donald Trump. He described Trump in deeply negative terms, calling him “one of the most destructive presidents and human beings” of his lifetime.
He also raised concerns about the direction of the country, warning that democratic norms and key institutions could be under pressure. His remarks extended to universities, corporate leadership, law firms, and political figures, which he suggested were increasingly yielding to external influence.
