Vertical ridges, which run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail like tiny rails, are the most common variety. In many cases, these are simply a natural byproduct of aging, much like wrinkles on the skin. As we get older, the cell turnover in our nail beds slows down, and the natural oils that keep the nail plate smooth begin to diminish. However, if these vertical ridges appear suddenly or are accompanied by brittleness, they may be signaling a nutritional gap. Specifically, a lack of iron, magnesium, or protein can cause the nail to grow unevenly, creating a textured surface that reflects a struggle for resources at the cellular level.
