A Doctor’s Simple Trick to Help You Drift Off When You Can’t Sleep

Waking up in the middle of the night can be frustrating, especially when you know an early morning is looming. Tossing and turning while your mind races through work, bills, and daily worries can leave you restless and exhausted. Many people experience this struggle — and it’s surprisingly common to find yourself wide awake around 3 a.m., unable to fall back asleep.

Now, TV doctor Amir Khan, known for his appearances on ITV, is sharing an effective method to help you drift off again during those restless hours. In a recent video, Dr. Khan explained the problem: “Imagine everyone else is asleep, the house is quiet, but your brain won’t stop churning out stressful thoughts. Work, money, kids, planning, problem-solving — your mind is too active, and your body thinks it’s not safe to sleep.”

Instead of the old “counting sheep” trick, Dr. Khan suggests a technique called cognitive shuffling. This method helps interrupt racing thoughts, scrambles your mental patterns, and signals to your brain that it’s safe to fall back asleep. Essentially, it tricks your mind into sleep mode.
