A Prisoner Learns the Cell Block Humor System
A man entering prison for the first time struggled to understand the nightly jokes. As the lights went out, his cellmate yelled, “Number twelve!” and the entire cell block erupted in laughter. A few minutes later, someone yelled, “Number four!” and again, the room shook with laughter.
Curious, the newcomer asked, “Why are you all laughing at numbers?”
His cellmate explained, “We’ve all been here so long that we know the old jokes by number. Instead of telling the joke, we just yell the number.”
Excited to join in, the new prisoner walked up and shouted, “Number twenty-nine!”
The whole cell block burst into the loudest, most uncontrollable laughter anyone had ever heard. When the noise finally settled, he asked, bewildered, “Why was that one so funny?”
The older prisoner wiped tears from his eyes and said, “Oh, we’d never heard that one before!”
