A heartbreaking tragedy in Las Vegas has left the nation in shock. Tawnia McGeehan, 38, allegedly killed her 11-year-old daughter, Addi Smith, before taking her own life while in the city for a cheer competition. New details reveal that tensions with other parents may have played a role in the devastating events.
The incident unfolded on Sunday at the Rio Hotel & Casino. Family members, concerned after receiving no response, requested a welfare check. Police arrived around 10:45 a.m., knocking on the door and calling into the room multiple times, but initially found no evidence of danger and left the scene.
Hours later, security returned. At 2:27 p.m., they entered the hotel room and discovered Tawnia and Addi unresponsive. Both had suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. Police have stated that preliminary evidence indicates Tawnia shot her daughter before turning the weapon on herself.
Disturbing Messages and Tensions with Other Parents
According to Tawnia’s mother, Connie McGeehan, the tragic events may have been fueled by ongoing conflict with other mothers on the Utah Xtreme Cheer (UXC) team. Connie said her daughter had received “mean texts” from one or two women on the team, blaming Addi for a mishap during a previous competition.
“There was tension that escalated a month ago,” Connie told the NY Post. “At the last competition, another girl got dropped, and some moms blamed Addi. Cheer was everything to her and Addi, and I think something happened the day before that made her spiral.”
