Family Statement Released
In the days following the tragedy, the Dorgan family issued a statement through their attorney, Joseph Signore.
“We are all deeply and profoundly affected by the recent events that took place at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena. We are reminded that behind every headline is a family experiencing profound pain and loss. We care greatly for all families impacted by this recent tragedy and our thoughts are with them.”
The statement emphasized that while many questions remain, their focus is on those who were injured and whose lives have been permanently changed.
Bystander Intervention Prevented Further Harm
Police credited a bystander, Michael Black, with intervening during the attack and helping prevent further casualties. Black told reporters that when he heard the gunfire, he immediately told his wife to run before confronting the shooter.
“I saw the gun and jumped down,” he said. “I was able to get it away.”
Others nearby assisted in restraining the suspect until authorities arrived. Officials stated that without this quick response, the outcome could have been even more severe.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities say preliminary findings suggest the shooting stemmed from a personal family dispute and was not a random act of violence. Law enforcement is continuing to examine the suspect’s background, prior interactions, and social media activity as part of the investigation.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes inside and outside the arena, with parents rushing to find their children and emergency responders transporting victims on stretchers.
“This was one person’s vendetta against their family,” said Amanda Wallace-Hubbard, identified as the suspect’s daughter from a previous relationship. “It wasn’t random.”
Community in Mourning
The tragedy has left the Pawtucket community grappling with grief and shock. School officials, local leaders, and residents have expressed condolences and pledged support for those affected. Counseling services have been made available for students, families, and first responders.
As investigators continue their work, the focus remains on healing and supporting the victims’ loved ones during an incredibly painful time.
